Inner Game of Work
When Gallwey published his first book, The Inner Game of Tennis, in 1974 he revolutionised learning theory, by showing a new approach to improving sports performance. What surprised Gallwey was that a Vice President at AT & T asked him to apply the book’s principles to his corporation. It worked very effectively and he went on to write The Inner Game of Work, which shows how anyone can improve their performance in their career using the inner game principles.
The basic premise is that everyone has within them the ability to improve themselves but what interferes with this process is our own minds, which can constantly criticize or limit our abilities. His method of overcoming this problem by focusing on what is actually going on in a situation is both simple and startling in its results.
Gallwey explains the theory and its development in the first few chapters of the book and then goes on to look at specific examples of its application such as; how to improve meetings, presentation skills, time management and persuasion in the work place.
I have used Gallwey’s methods in both ski coaching and executive coaching and have been amazed at the results. The approach can be quite challenging in that the coach does not tell the person how to carry out an activity but rather makes them aware of how they are currently performing. But from this alone, quite substantial performance improvements are possible. A great read!
